All bark or all bite? georgia season preview

After two disappointing outings in the new 12-team College Football Playoff, Kirby Smart and the Bulldogs look to get over the hump and reach the national title game for the first time since the historic 2022 team. Led by veteran quarterback Gunner Stockton, the Dawgs are third in national title odds according to FanDuel. Coach Smart continues to benefit from continuity among his coordinators, with Mike Bobo entering his fourth season as offensive coordinator and Glenn Schumann entering his eighth season leading the Dawgs’ defense. Especially due to the fact that this is a group that only brought in 9 transfers over the offseason, the chemistry of this Bulldogs group should be top-notch.

With seven starters returning on offense and an improved offensive line, the Bulldogs look to capitalize on an open SEC race with no clear favorite. Gunner Stockton was one of the most clutch quarterbacks in the country last year and looks to be a Heisman contender this year. The Dawgs look to have a two-headed monster in the running back room this year with two high-powered third-year backs, Nate Frazier and Chauncey Bowens; expect the duo to both play themselves into draftable running backs by the end of the year in what will likely shape out to be an extremely run-heavy offense. This year, they will lose the majority of last season’s receiving production with the departures of Zachariah Branch, Colbie Young, and Oscar Delp, a trio that combined for 1430 receiving yards a year ago and bailed the Bulldogs out of many tough SEC situations. London Humphreys is the top returner in the receiver room, and they added Isiah Canion, a Georgia Tech transfer with the potential to plug in as the Bulldogs' much-needed WR1. Canion hauled in 33 catches for 480 yards at Georgia Tech a year ago. The Bulldogs also have many highly rated wide receivers and tight ends that the coaches are confident have developed. Phil Rauscher, the new offensive line coach, lost two starters in Third-Team All-American Micah Morris and first-round pick Monroe Freeling. However, Georgia still has a highly regarded offensive line and is considered a Joe Moore Award contender. While the Bulldogs return the entire left side of LT Earnest Greene, LG Dontrell Glover, and C Drew Bobo from last years line, RG Zykie Helton will start in his true freshman year next to RT Juan Gaston; another first-year starter for the Dawgs. If the inexperienced right side of the line can hang with the big boys of SEC D-linemen, expect there to be an extremely efficient rushing attack in Athens led by yet another elite offensive line.

Can They Play Defense?: The short answer is yes. These 2026 Bulldogs look to build on a defense that was one of the best in the country last year, ranking 12th nationally in both points allowed and total yards allowed. Although they ended the season getting gashed by Trinidad Chambliss through the air, there is no doubt this is still one of the best defenses in the country. Last year, the Bulldogs held opponents to 2.9 yards per rush but only 20 sacks. This season, they lose elite nose tackle Christen Miller but should have a stronger pass rush and will still be very disruptive, as Georgia defensive lines typically are.

Over the offseason, the Dawgs lost linebackers CJ Allen and Joenel Aguero, but return Raylen Wilson, Chris Cole, and Justin Williams while also adding Clemson transfer Khalil Barnes, giving Georgia one of the strongest linebacker corps in the country for what seems like the tenth consecutive year. In the defensive backfield, they lose third-rounder Daylen Everette and JaCorey Thomas but return superstar safety KJ Bolden and standout corner Ellis Robinson IV, giving Georgia the potential to have one of the top units in the country if the defensive line supplies enough pressure. Both Robinson and Bolden were five-star prospects in the class of 2024 and look to play themselves into first-round picks in their junior season. 

Special Teams Trouble?: Coach Kirby Smart will lose elite punt returner Zachariah Branch, but Georgia should still have a strong special teams unit. Peyton Woodring is one of the best kickers in the country, having hit 17 of 19 field goals last season, and if a quality punter emerges, Georgia’s traditionally elite special teams unit should stay near the top of the country. Expect redshirt freshman Talyn Taylor to take the reins at punt returner in Branch’s absence.

Overall, the Bulldogs lost a significant amount of talent, but have reloaded like any Georgia team of the Kirby Smart era. This team is fully reloaded and should be contending not only for SEC championships but also for national championships, unlike the Georgia teams of the past couple of years. Looking at their schedule, the toughest games look to be Oklahoma, at Alabama, and at Ole Miss. This season, I believe the Bulldogs take care of business in the easier games as Georgia teams typically do, beat Oklahoma, but split the road games at Alabama and Ole Miss. Quarterbacks Keelon Russell and Trinidad Chambliss both have elite traits and improvisation skills, and I believe the Georgia defensive line will have trouble containing one of these quarterbacks, leading to opportunities downfield. Overall, I have the Bulldogs going 11-1 and looking primed for another SEC championship. This Georgia team has a chance to be special, led by a veteran quarterback, a strong running game, and a talented offensive line, but I believe it comes down to the defensive line’s ability to generate pressure in key situations.

That being said, the Bulldogs have all the pieces necessary to return to the top of college football, and I expect to see Kirby Smart in the playoff where he belongs after an 11-1 regular season.
