Texas Tech Tames the Wildcats: Red Raiders Lean on Ground Game to Outlast Arizona

Talk about a pivotal Big 12 showdown with massive playoff implications. This afternoon, the No. 13 Texas Tech Red Raiders defended their home turf in Lubbock, snapping No. 22 Arizona's five-game winning streak with a thrilling 34-26 victory. Both teams entered the day tied for second place in the conference, but Texas Tech used a completely dominant rushing attack to edge ahead and secure a school-record-tying 13th consecutive home victory.

The biggest storyline before kickoff was a massive gamble by Texas Tech head coach Joey McGuire.

After a frustrating loss to Cincinnati last week, McGuire made the bold choice to bench starting quarterback Will Hammond. He handed the keys of the offense to Florida State transfer Thomas Castellanos, and the move paid off immediately. Castellanos gave Arizona's defense fits all day with his mobility, throwing for two touchdowns and running for 117 yards and another score on the ground.

Arizona's explosive passing attack certainly didn't go down without a fight. Quarterback Noah Fifita put up monster numbers, throwing for a ridiculous 417 yards on the day.

His biggest play came on a massive third-down scramble where he launched an unbelievable, 94-yard touchdown pass to sophomore Isaiah Mizell, who finished with 182 receiving yards. But while the Wildcats were highly dangerous through the air, they faced a devastating setback when standout freshman receiver R.J. Mosley went down with a serious leg injury.

Ultimately, this game was won and lost right in the trenches. While Fifita was throwing darts, his offensive line was completely outmatched by the Red Raiders' physical defensive front. Texas Tech racked up five sacks on the day and completely suffocated Arizona's ground game, holding the Wildcats to a shocking 12 total rushing yards.

On the flip side, Texas Tech ran the ball completely at will, piling up a staggering 328 yards on the ground. Alongside Castellanos, running back J'Koby Williams had an absolute breakout performance, rushing for 175 yards and icing the game late in the fourth quarter with an explosive, 64-yard touchdown run.

The small execution variables turned out to be the difference-maker. Arizona took a brief lead in the third quarter on a short touchdown run by Kedrick Reescano, but Texas Tech blocked the extra point to keep the score tied at 23. Castellanos immediately punished the mistake, converting a clutch fourth-and-short with a 27-yard touchdown pass to Kenny Johnson to take a lead they would never give back. Arizona kicked a late field goal to get within one possession with 22 seconds left, but Texas Tech cleanly recovered the onside kick to seal the victory. With the win, the Red Raiders improve to 7-1 and keep their Big 12 championship dreams alive, while Arizona drops to 6-2 ahead of a big Friday night home game against TCU.
