Halloween Horror or Holiday Treat: Can UNC Shock the No. 1 Team in the Country Tonight?
UNC is looking to put Miami on upset watch on Halloween...

If you want a high-stakes setting for a college football game, hosting the top-ranked team in the nation on Halloween night is about as good as it gets. Tonight, Kenan Memorial Stadium is going to be absolutely packed as the 4-3 North Carolina Tar Heels try to pull off a massive upset against the undefeated, 7-0 Miami Hurricanes.

The oddsmakers aren't giving the Tar Heels much of a chance here, making Miami a heavy 14.5-point favorite on the road. UNC is also trying to halt the unraveling of their season after a brutal 31-30 loss to Syracuse last weekend. Still, history gives us a reason to watch closely with North Carolina winning the last five games against Miami dating back to 2019. If Bill Belichick wants a signature, legacy-defining win tonight, his team will have to play flawless football.

The biggest key to staying competitive tonight is keeping the ball out of Miami's hands. Quarterback Billy Edwards Jr. has put up decent numbers this year with 1,260 passing yards and 11 touchdowns, but his 5 interceptions are exactly the kind of mistakes that will kill any chance of an upset tonight. Miami's defensive line features absolute monsters like Justin Scott and Ahmad Moten Sr., so Edwards cannot afford to hold onto the ball too long.

The good news is that UNC has the depth out wide to counter that pressure. Jordan Shipp has been a reliable target all season with 543 yards, and he needs to win his matchups early to soften up the coverage. If Edwards can get the ball out quickly to Ohio State transfer tight end Jelani Thurman and keep slot weapon Trech Kekahuna involved on short routes, it will slow down Miami's pass rush and give the ground game some room to work.

On defense, the task tonight is about as scary as a horror movie. Miami’s offense is putting up an incredible 49 points per game behind Heisman-candidate quarterback Darian Mensah. His stat line this year is ridiculous - 2,151 yards, 22 touchdowns, and just a single interception.

A huge chunk of those plays go to Malachi Toney, who already has 952 yards and 11 touchdowns on the year. With defensive coordinator Steve Belichick still away on medical leave, Bill Belichick is once again calling the plays and trying to find a way to make Mensah uncomfortable.

No defense has been able to stop the duo of Mensah and Toney so far, and a UNC defense that ranks just #74 nationally in passing yards allowed per game doesnt exactly strike fear in OC Shannon Dawson. Expect the Hurricanes air attack to stay in action early and often.

That means sophomore defensive tackle Xavier Lewis, who has been a bright spot with 7 sacks this year, needs to have a monster game and disrupt Miami's timing before their deep routes can develop.

On the offensive side of the ball for the Tar Heels, clock control is key per usual against a higher ranked opponent. If the Tar Heels want to have any type of success on offense, star RB and offseason Michigan transfer Benjamin Hall needs to have a big game. Expect Hall to tally 15+ carries on the night against a Miami defensive line that let Florida State run all over them just two weeks ago. Hall is the games key player for the Tar Heels.

When the stadium lights turn on tonight, expect things to get loud and unpredictable. Kenan Stadium is a tough place to play when the crowd gets into it, and anything can happen in a night game under these conditions.

North Carolina has the raw talent in their reloaded receiver room to go blow-for-blow with Miami if they are clicking, but they have to finish drives with six points instead of settling for field goals. Force turnovers, protect the ball on offense, and UNC can absolutely push the best team in the nation to its limits.
