Belichick Locks Down First Ranked Win in a Gritty Upset AT PITT
CFB Weekly’s Mason Maciejewski recaps UNC’s destruction of Pitts previously undefeated season on Saturday

Wow, what a statement game for the Tar Heels. If you thought the optimism around this team was fading after back-to-back losses, think again. On Saturday afternoon, Bill Belichick and the North Carolina Tar Heels went straight into Acrisure Stadium and pulled off a stunning 21-17 upset over the previously undefeated, No. 25 ranked Pittsburgh Panthers. Pitt entered the matchup as the favorite on their home turf, but the Tar Heels dug in, survived a rough first half, and walked away with Belichick’s very first signature victory over a ranked college opponent.
Things looked incredibly shaky to start out. Pitt's defense, which entered the week ranked 11th nationally in total defense and allowing just 244.5 yards per game, brought significant pressure to start the game, keeping the Tar Heels completely scoreless through the first quarter. The Panthers jumped out to a quick 10-0 lead thanks to a short rushing touchdown by La'Vell Wright and a 41-yard field goal from Antonio Chadha. UNC's offense was clearly out of rhythm early on, and quarterback Billy Edwards Jr. had a rollercoaster of a day, throwing two interceptions and getting sacked three times by a very aggressive Pitt defensive front. But right when it felt like the game might get out of hand, the Tar Heels found their footing with a crucial touchdown from Ohio State transfer tight end Jelani Thurman in the second quarter to stay alive.
The absolute turning point of this game came down to pure, explosive magic in the fourth quarter. With the game on the line, Edwards Jr. launched a beautiful deep ball to Shamar Easter, who took it all the way for a massive 75-yard touchdown reception to reclaim the lead. Edwards finished the day with 249 passing yards and two touchdowns, and while he had some mistakes, he made the plays that mattered most. Wideout Jordan Shipp was also an absolute rock for the passing attack, fighting through coverage to lead the team with 6 catches for 93 yards.
As great as the offense was in the clutch, this game was won by the defense. Pitt was missing their star starting quarterback Mason Heintschel due to a season-ending injury, but backup Holden Geriner still gave the Tar Heels a fight, throwing for 219 yards. However, when the game reached its climax in the final minutes, the Tar Heel defense turned into an absolute brick wall. They stepped up to force three consecutive turnovers on downs deep in their own territory, completely slamming the door on Pitt's offense to secure the win.
This victory is absolutely massive for the trajectory of the season. It is North Carolina’s first win against a ranked opponent in three years, and it proves that this team has the grit to win ugly games on the road. There are still plenty of things to clean up, especially with pass protection and protecting the football, but leaving Pittsburgh with a 21-17 victory is something this fanbase should be incredibly proud of. The Tar Heels are officially 3-2, the Belichick era has its first signature moment, and the rest of the ACC slate just got a whole lot more exciting.
