dive in WITH SATURDAY INDEX: Alabama vs georgia game preview
CFB Weekly partners with Saturday Index to provide an in-depth preview of the battle in the trenches that will decide Saturday night's matchup between Alabama and Georgia

No. 4 Georgia Heads to Tuscaloosa for a Week 6 Showdown With No. 2 Alabama
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. The SEC has been waiting on a game like this one. Georgia, ranked #2 in the country in the Saturday Index, walks into Bryant-Denny Stadium on Saturday to face an Alabama team that has made life miserable for every offense it has seen so far. The Saturday Index model has the Crimson Tide winning a close one, 27-24, with a 58% win outlook.
Georgia's Offense Has Been Nearly Flawless
Through five games, the Bulldogs have looked like a machine, and quarterback Gunner Stockton has been the one running it. He has completed 99 of 102 passes for 1,049 yards and was a perfect 32 of 32 against Vanderbilt. Stockton returned for his full second season as the Bulldogs' starter and has seen his draft stock improve mightily as a result.

However, how he's done it should raise questions about the sustainability of the Bulldogs offensive success. A big chunk of Stockton's work has come on quick throws at or behind the line of scrimmage, the screens and short routes that keep an offense on schedule. Against inferior competition, this has worked, but the strategy of dink-and-dunking screens will not work in SEC play.
Stockton's downfield passing has been far less consistent: he is just 6 of 18 on throws of 20-plus air yards. That's a quarterback who rarely loses Georgia a game, but hasn't yet been asked to win one with his arm against a defense that can take away the easy stuff. Expect this weeks matchup against Alabama to be the first time Stockton is asked to win this Georgia team a game.
Despite the lack of a consistent downfield passing game however, Saturday Index credits the Bulldogs offense with a whopping +0.41 EPA (expected points added) to start the year, showing that this offense is more than capable of scoring.
What has made this Bulldogs offensive output possible is the running game. The ground game has been the engine, and four Bulldogs RB have tallied 15+ carries to start the year, highlighting the groups elite depth.
The UGA RB trio of Chauncey Bowens, Nate Frazier, and Dwight Phillips have averaged an absolutely elite 6.6 yards per carry as the team as a whole piles up 8.0 yards per play.
Another concerning factor for this Bulldogs offense is the absence of Chauncey Bowens. Bowens will not be in uniform against Alabama.

For this Alabama defensive front, stopping the Bulldogs running game should be priority #1. Alabama's recipe for success lies in stacking the box, limiting Georgia's elite rushing attack, and forcing Stockton to win a game through the air for the first time on Saturday night.
Alabama's Defense Is the Real Test
While Georgia's rushing attack has been elite, that elite YPC number is about to run into the best run defense Georgia has seen.
Alabama is allowing just 2.5 yards per carry and 5.0 yards per play, and opposing offenses have rarely been able to stay ahead of the chains against it.
Alabama LB Luke Metz has played as one of the country's best middle linebackers to start the year, and his 34 total tackles should scare Bulldogs OC Mike Bobo away from running the ball up the middle all night. Metz is joined by LB Yhonzae Pierre, who has emerged as Alabama DC Cade Womack's favorite pass rusher from the LB position.

Expect Womack to stack the box consistently with Metz and Pierre leading the way. The most important position group of the game for either team is this Alabama linebacking room, which will be tasked with leading the charge against an elite Bulldogs rushing attack.
This Bama defense was gashed through the ground against Florida State, and the Bulldogs will look to duplicate that same gameplan.
An Experienced Alabama Secondary
Through the air, the advantage goes to this Alabama secondary. While the Tide returned Bray Hubbard, Keon Sabb, Dijon Lee, and Zabien Brown from a season ago, the Bulldogs lost Zachariah Branch, Dillon Bell, and Colbie Young from last year's receiving room.
Hubbard and Sabb return for their fourth years as starters in college football, while Lee and Brown started as freshmen at DB for the Tide a year ago. This Alabama secondary is one of the most talented and experienced groups in the country. In this matchup last time in Tuscaloosa, it was Zabien Brown who sealed the game with a winning interception.
This leaves the Tide with an extreme advantage and leaves the Bulldogs with inexperienced new offensive starters who will now be forced to step up in a major way.
Key Players
UGA WR Talyn Taylor: Taylor stepped into an expanded role after a red-shirt season a year ago, and he has not disappointed. Taylor has tallied 12 receptions for 176 yards and 3 TDs to start the season, and has looked like the teams WR1.
In a matchup against an extremely experienced secondary where Stockton will be forced into consistent passing situations, the Dawgs will need Taylor to get open consistently. Taylor will be absolutely crucial for this Bulldogs offense.

Alabama DL Devan Thompkins: For a Georgia offense that will need to move the ball, facing a ferocious pass rush is a nightmare, and Thompkins could provide some nightmare fuel. According to Saturday Index, Thompkins leads the Tide defensive line with 3 sacks and 12.5 tackles to start the year. The tide will need a big game from their best pass rusher on Saturday.

Georgia's opponents so far were Tennessee State, Western Kentucky, Arkansas, Oklahoma and Vanderbilt, so we're still learning how much of that offensive production is Georgia and how much is the schedule. The Tide also bring back all five of last year's starters in the secondary, so taking away the quick throws is a realistic plan.
The Other Side of the Ball: A Big Opportunity for Georgia's Interior
If Georgia is going to tilt this game, it may do it on the defensive side, where the Bulldogs defensive line has a chance to make a name for themselves against an Alabama offensive line that looks almost nothing like last year's, which was one of the best position groups in the country.
The Tide return exactly one starter up front. Michael Carroll started six games as a true freshman last season and is the lone holdover from a line that struggled mightily. Alabama finished 15th in the SEC in rushing yards per game in 2025, and the Tide overhauled the position group, bringing in a new position coach in Adrian Klemm and filling the rest of the starting five with transfers and former reserves. An inexperienced unit still learning to work together is exactly the kind of opponent a deep, talented Georgia front wants to see.

Key Players
The first name to watch is UGA DL Jordan Hall. The 6-foot-4, 320-pound redshirt junior is back after a season-ending knee injury against Florida in 2025. Before it, he played and started eight games and finished with 12 tackles and two tackles for loss. His best day of the year came against Alabama a year ago, when he matched his career high with four tackles and added a tackle for loss.

Then there's sophomore Elijah Griffin, the rising star of the position group. Griffin was a second-team preseason All-SEC pick after a freshman year in which he had 22 tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss and a sack. He also played in last December's SEC Championship Game against Alabama, so he's seen the Tide up close. At 310 pounds, he is a strong candidate to push the pocket against a line that hasn't had much time to gel. Griffin is a former five-star and looks to show the world why in primetime.
If Hall and Griffin can collapse the middle and force Alabama's quarterback off his spot, the game plan changes for the Tide. If they can't, Alabama's youth up front may not matter as much as it seems.
The Pick
When two teams are this evenly matched, home field tends to settle it. Georgia's front will get its chances against an inexperienced Alabama line, but the Tide's defense is one of the best defensive units in the country, and I trust its secondary to lock down an unproven Bulldogs passing attack.
However, I trust this Bulldogs defensive line, and I trust the veteran gunslinger Gunnar Stockton to find a way against a young Alabama team. This Bulldogs secondary has talent of their own, with KJ Bolden and Ellis Robinson entering Saturday as projected first-rounders, and Kirby Smart will be fired up to avenge the loss in this game a year ago.
I think Kirby Smart's defense, led by future first-rounders and elite defensive linemen, will prevail, and I expect experience to outlast a young Alabama team. This will be another SEC thriller.
Prediction: Georgia 24, Alabama 20
