MOVING PIECES: MIAMI’S INJURY BUG BITES

Miami safety Bryce Fitzgerald might have a new job description.

Fitzgerald entered the year as one of the best defensive backs in the country after bursting onto the national scene a year ago. The former four star and Miami native tallied a whopping 6 interceptions for the Hurricanes defense in 2025, and entered 2026 looking to replicate that as a ball-hawk for the Canes secondary.

However, that was as a safety, and now after injuries to multiple members of the Hurricanes secondary, Fitzgerald is likely to be pushed to play CB for the first time in his collegiate career.

Injuries to projected first-rounder OJ Frederique, alonh with former Wisconsin transfer Xavier Lucas have left this Miami secondary in shambles. Frederique was the Hurricanes CB1 to open the year while Lucas was slotted to replace Keionte Scott in the most important role in Corey Heatherman’s defense; the nickel back position.

As a response, expect the Hurricanes to promote current CB2 Ethan O’Connor to a new role as CB1. O’Connor played at an elite level last season for the Hurricanes in all games besides the teams college football playoff matchups, where O’Connor was consistently targeted successfully on. Quite frankly, O’Connor was terrible in last years playoffs and will need to improve in his elevated role in 2026. 

Taking O’Connors spot as CB2 will be Fitzgerald, and taking Lucas’s spot as nickel back will be veteran returner Damari Brown. Brown has 40 career tackles in three years in Coral Gables and has the experience necessary to lead the defense in the same way Scott did at the position a year ago.

Expect freshman CB Brody Jennings to rotate as a fresh body for the Canes secondary on the outside, and for veteran Boston College transfer Omar Thornton to plug in at safety to replace Fitzgerald. True freshman safety JJ Dunnigan also tallied 5+ tackles against Florida A&M, and could play himself into an expanded role with injuries and moving pieces all around. Safety Jeremiah Poyser will not see his role change in any way.

More will be expected out of O’Connor and Damari Brown, Fitzgerald will change positions, and true freshman like Brody Jennings and JJ Dunnigan will gain meaningful experience to replace the production from Frederique and Lucas, who are each expected to be out for “at least a month” according to Mario Cristobal. Whether the Miami defense, which has started the year on absolute tear, will suffer due to these changes is soon to be known.

The Canes may not have faced much resistance on the scoreboard, but here they are facing their injury bug of the year. Can this Canes secondary prove their depth? Or will injuries be too much?. We will find out as ACC play begins…
