WHATs next: FSU FIRES THEIR ATHLETIC DIRECTOR
CFB Weekly’s Carter Ball breaks down what’s next for Florida State after firing their athletic director in the middle of the season. What does this mean for FSU football, and what happens to Billy Norvell? Find out below…

Florida State athletic director Michael Alford has been fired. Alford served as AD for the Seminoles for approximately 5 years, and served as the schools athletic director for the historic 2023 season where the Seminoles went 13-0 and did not make the college football playoff.
Since that magical 2023 season, FSU football has been on the decline.
Consecutive seasons of 1-11, 5-7, and now just 1-1 to start the 2026 campaign after a disappointing home loss to SMU, have left fans waiting for a change. However, most fans likely assumed HC Mike Norvell would see his job leave before Alford saw his.
What this means for Norvell:
FSU’s boosters and higher ups sent Norvell a message with this firing; we are not afraid to make changes mid season. While a loss to Alabama likely won’t result in an immediate firing, Norvell is coaching for his job for the rest of the year. If FSU loses four games or more this season, expect Norvell to be fired right then and there.
What this means for FSU:
Florida State University would not have made this move without having a replacement for Alford already in place. Who this is is unknown, but whoever it is may want to bring in their own leader of the program during the offseason. Don’t be surprised if Alford’s replacement opts for a new HC next season, regardless of Norvells performance this season in Tallahassee.
While Norvell can prevent himself from a mid-season firing with good performance, the odds are that Mike Norvell will not be Florida States head coach in a year. A change at athletic director is unlikely to directly impact the Noles performance on the field this season, but should be used as a message to Mike Norvell that his time in Tallahassee is running on a limited time clock.
